BEYOND CAPRI

Off the island

Thanks to the swift and frequent maritime connections linking Capri with Naples, Sorrento and, in the summer, the Amalfi Coast, a trip to some of the Campania region's many attractions is one of the most popular ways of spending a day away from the island.

Pompei and Herculaneum

Both Pompei and Hercolaneum conserve the ruins of the ancient towns buried under the ash created by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 B.C. The archeological sites are easily reached form Capri. Sea connections to Sorrento (20 minutes in hydrofoil) run throughout the year. From Sorrento railway station, trains reach the sites in approximately 20 minutes. The journey from the port to the station of Sorrento takes just a few minutes by bus or taxi and a mere 10 minute walk

Positano and the Amalfi Coast

From Capri, the legendary Amalfi Coast can quickly be reached by boat, with landings at Positano (circa 40 minutes) or Amalfi (circa 60 minutes). Direct sea connections are only available in the summer months. The Amalfi Coast can also be reached by bus from Sorrento (40 minutes to Positano; 1 hour to Amalfi). Positano is famous for its picturesque little lanes lined with boutiques selling the townÂ’s colorful beach wear. Amalfi is dominated by its magnificent majolica domed cathedral. The medieval town of Ravello, home to Villa Ruffolo and Villa Cimbrone, is perhaps best known for its splendid gardens.
